Millwall got their new year off to a “perfect start” says Millwall Head Coach Joe Edwards following the Lions’ 1-0 win away to Bristol City on this New Years Day.

After the win, Millwall are now unbeaten in 5 games and are on a run of 3 wins on the bounce following their 2 wins over the Christmas period against QPR and Norwich City respectively and they have 4 clean sheets on the bounce too.

Club captain Shaun Hutchinson scored the winning goal for Millwall in the 93rd minute after esteemed pressure by Millwall, his first goal since March 2021.

Matija Sarkic made a great save in the first half, City’s Jason Knight got on the end of a cross by Joe Williams, but Sarkic got down low into the bottom left corner and pulled off an unbelievable stop. That was either side’s biggest chance in the first half with both teams trying to figure out a way to open each other’s defenses.

Millwall started the second half as they meant to go on, with Murray Wallace missing a good chance to put the lions ahead after only 6 minutes. George Honeyman whipped in the ball from a corner and the Scotsman headed it just a little too high. However, Millwall continued fighting for the ball and were the better team for most of the second half, some good chances for the lions, but none of them found the back of the net.

That was until stoppage time when club captain Shaun Hutchinson volleyed home a knockdown by Billy Mitchell to put the lions in front with only a few minutes of the game to go.  Despite a late chance to equalise with a sloppy free kick conceded by Jake Cooper and tensions beginning to boil over at Ashton Gate, Bristol City just didn’t have it in them and Millwall were the victors for only the 8th time this season.

Millwall next face Leicester City in the FA Cup third round at The Den and they will fancy themselves to get a win against their EFL Championship rivals whilst on this good run of form.
